UDAIPUR- FOOD

Wherever you go in Udaipur, you are sure to find traditional diverse Indian cuisine. The food caters to everyone’s taste- spicy, tangy, sweet, you name it! Every dish is packed with flavor. The city Udaipur offers the food of the state- Rajasthan. Many of the dishes have been passed on from generation to generation. The same food on your plate has been relished by the Royal Rajput's and figures in the Mewar Kingdom. Even if you want to eat something western or non- traditional, don’t worry! There are fast-food joints like Subway or McDonalds round the block. However, if you visit this city full of culture, you have to try these dishes on the list.

1. Kachori

1








A Kachori is a deep-fried pastry disc which is enjoyed as an evening snack. Everyone rushes to get a taste of a fresh Kachori stuffed with lentil or onions. This warm delight gives one a feeling of pleasure in the chilly evening breeze. The best places to try a Kachori are Paliwaal Misthan Restaurant and Jagdish Shri Restaurant near the Jagdish Temple.


2. Gatte Ki Sabzi 












This Rajasthani curry is a tangy, spicy, yogurt-based curry. ‘Gatta’ refers to solid dumpling pieces. These are gram flour dumplings steamed in spices. The Mewari preparation includes the use of garlic, tomatoes and onions in it. The Gatta dough in kneaded, rolled out, shaped, steamed and added to the curry.It is then garnished with a handful of fresh coriander leaves. It is best paired with any kind of roti or paratha (Indian flatbread).


Dal Baati Churma


‘Churma’-a powdered sweetened cereal, is a popular delicacy served with ‘Dal’ meaning lentils and ‘Baati’ meaning baked wheat ball. Baati made of wheat, ghee and camel milk was first mentioned during the reign of Bappa Rawal. It was the Gulhilots wartime meal. The fire-baked or fried doughballs are ground and mixed with ghee, powdered sugar and dry fruits.

 

Banjara Murgh (Nomadic chicken curry)


Banjara Murgh is originated from the Banjara community in India. Murgh or the chicken is marination in a bunch of spices, lemon juice and curd. In the later steps it is added and cooked well with the delicious tomato-based curry. The spices used such as amchur powder and chili powder gives the curry a needed kick while elevating the Banjara styled recipe a whole new other level.

 


     Laal Maas

    


 Laal maas refers to red mutton. It is a spicy mutton curry prepared in a sauce of yogurt, hot spices and local red chillis. The tender meat is lip-smacking. In the olden days, the “maas” or rather meat (mutton) was replaced with jungli maas which means the wild meat like deer's, oxen's or whatever the fresh catch was.

 


 Ghewar


Ghewar is a Rajasthani dessert made up of flour, ghee, sugar and milk. It is a disc shaped sweet cake soaked in a sugary syrup. It is popularly served in the month of Shravan and this delight is enjoyed on the day of the Raksha-Bandhan festival (festival of siblinghood). According to the state tradition it is gifted to the married daughter on Sinjara (festival of the daughters-in-law).

 

Malpua


Malpua is a festive treat which is served with rich, creamy Rabdi (sweetened thick milk). They can also be termed as North Indian sweet pancakes. Its crispy edges and juicy center leaves everyone craving for more! They are circular fried with a golden-brown hue, and it’s topped with dry fruits like almonds and pistachios. Today, this dish has become very popular and has spread out into several states like Maharashtra, Bhopal, West Bengal etc.


Moong Dal Halwa


Moong ki Dal ka Halwa is a heavy, rich, mouthwatering dessert. It is popular in Udaipur, other parts of Rajasthan and North India. It is perfect for a cold winter night as this sweet is sure to keep you warm and cheerful. It is made up of Dal (lentils), milk, ghee, fragrant flavoring and nuts. Its one of those Indian specialties which is both healthy as well as a bit junk. The Halwas soft fluffy texture brings joy to all who try it.


 Kalakand


Kalakand is a popular sweet which is practically equivalent to an Indian milk cake. Made with milk and sugar, kalakand comes together in under 15 minutes. The crunch of topped dry fruits compliments the moist crumbly texture of the square bite piece. Mishri Mawa is one of the alternative names for Kalakand. This sweet fudge is extremely addictive and will definitely leave you wanting more!
