City Palace


The city palace in Udaipur which was built by Maharana Udai Singh II is a classic example of the Rajasthani Rajput architecture overlooking the grand Lake Pichola. Since it was built on a hilltop, its panaromic view of the city proves to be a hotspot for tourism. The City Palace has numerous towers, balconies as well as several palaces built within its complex. Its interiors are fully adorned with wall paintings, mirrorwork, marblework, murals and leftover of colored glass. Historical monuments like the lake palace, Jug Mandir, Jagdish Temple and Monsoon palace all lie in the vicinity of the palace complex.

 

Jagdish Temple



Jagdish Temple is one of the wonderful works of the Mewar Dynasty keeping the rules of Vastushastra, the Hindu architectural science in mind. The temple was built in 1651 under the reign of Maharana Jagat Singh who ruled Udaipur from 1628 to 1653. It was earlier known as Jagannath Rai Temple, one of the many names of Lord Vishnu. Due to its beauty and unique location, many Hindu devotees come to visit this temple situated right in the center of the Old Udaipur city. The idol found in the main shrine is a four-armed image of Lord Vishnu. This three-storied temple has beautiful painted walls with vibrant colors and intricately decorated ceilings.


Jag Mandir

 


 

Jag Mandir or the Lake Garden Palace is built on an island on Lake Pichola. The royal family used the palace as a summer resort. The three-storied Jag Mandir palace has many impressive structures like the Gul Mahal, Garden courtyard, Bara Patharon ka mahal (palace of 12 stones), etc. The construction of the Jag Mandir can be credited to the three Maharana's of the Sisodia Rajput's of the Mewar kingdom. The only way to visit this palace is by boat from the Bansi Ghat Jetty next to the lake Palace in Udaipur.

 

Saheliyon ki Bari


Saheliyon ki Bari, famously known for its carved pavilions is located in the northern part of the Udaipur city. The name ‘Saheliyon ki Bari’ refers to the Garden of the maidens.  This garden was designed by the king Maharana Sangam himself for the royal ladies. It is located on the banks of the Fateh Sagar Lake and the garden is famous for its lush green lawns, marble art and fountains. It is said that the Queen was accompanied by 48 maids in her marriage. To offer them pleasure away from the pollical matters in court, the king presented this breath-taking area which also became very popular among the royal ladies.


Monsoon Palace



The Monsoon palace or Sajjangarh is a hilltop palatial residence named after its builder Maharana Sajjan Singh, located in Udaipur. It was mainly built to watch the monsoon clouds and it also offers a spectacular sunset view high in the Aravalli hills. It is said that Maharana built it at the top of the hills, overlooking the Fateh Sagar lake to get a view of his ancestral home, Chittorgarh. The Palace and the Sajjan Singh Sanctuary are the main attractions open till sunset. Thousands of tourists come flocking in to share the outstanding view.

 

Bagore ki Haveli

 


Bagore ki Haveli is a haveli (Indian mansion structure) right on the waterfront of Lake Pichola. It was built by a Sanadhya Brahmin, Shri Amarchand Badwa. By visiting this haveli, one can a glimpse of the royal life. There are currently 138 rooms, courtyards, terraces and several balconies. The interiors have intricate mirror work, display of royal costumes, preserved paintings depicting Mewar’s aristocratic culture. Many unique symbols of the Rajput clan such as jewelry boxes, dice games, hand fans, copper vessels and other pieces are on display to see.  


These places of cultural and traditional value are what makes up this beautiful city. Any tourist should definitely visit these locations and discover the preserved beauty of India.
